Freeze Thaw Attack


DynaCreteŽ PIM+ is the ideal preventative

Fact:

This is a natural process whereby moisture seeps into the pores and cracks of concrete, freezes and expands putting stress on the surface. Water expands approximately 9% as liquid changes to ice. When the water changes back to liquid, it releases the stress.Freeze Thaw Animation (36K)Spalling, scaling and cracking occur when the concrete cannot withstand the stress of the expansion and contraction associated with freeze/thaw. When salt is added to the equation, the rate of expansion can be increased to as high as 18%. The greater the expansion rate, the greater the potential for freeze/thaw damage. Air Entrained concrete ideally can prevent some freeze thaw damage by creating a network of tiny air pockets, which allow for expansion of freezing moisture. However, air entrained concrete is highly dependent on ideal conditions when pouring the concrete, as well climate.
